We caught up with LLM SQE1&2 student Callum Martin to hear all about how he’s found the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) so far.
After completing the SQE1 preparation part of his course, Callum passed the SQE1 exams with a result in the top 20% of candidates. In this guide for prospective SQE students, we’re sharing Callum’s helpful insights on the solicitor qualification route. Read on for Callum’s top tips on sitting the SQE exams, making the most of your time at BPP, and securing Qualifying Work Experience (QWE).
How has Callum found the SQE so far?
Callum is currently completing the Essentials for Practice module of the LLM SQE1&2. This is the master’s stage of the course, after having completed both the SQE1 and SQE2 prep, and having sat the SQE exams.
Despite passing with a high mark, Callum found the SQE particularly challenging, due to the large amount of new knowledge he needed to learn. However, learning the breadth of content he needed to sit the exams was helped by frequent preparation workshops. These workshops are collaborative, so students can support each other in their preparation for the SQE exams.
How is the SQE preparation course structured at BPP?
SQE preparation at BPP is designed to prepare you for each part of the SQE route to qualification in turn. This has proved to be the most effective way to ensure high SQE pass rates.
Speaking about the structure of the course, Callum said:
“My LLM at BPP consists of three components: an SQE1 prep course; an SQE2 prep course; and an Essentials for Practice component. Both the SQE1 and 2 preparation courses are designed to be studied in the months prior to the SRA’s centralised assessments, which I found extremely useful.”
Callum said that through this approach, he was able to develop the knowledge he needed at each stage of the SQE process. This allowed him to focus each time on what was ahead.
After sitting both SQE exams, Callum is now completing the Essential for Practice module. This has allowed him to focus on the specialised content he has chosen to study in this module, without the pressure of the SQE assessments. This way, Callum can spend the remaining time gaining skills and knowledge tailored to his future career.
How can students get the most out of BPP’s SQE courses?
BPP uses unique learning platforms to help students with their learning. Callum advises spending some time at the start of the course getting to grips with these platforms.
Virtual Practice Environment: Contextualises learning by mirroring the intranet used in law practice and uses real-world tasks in a simulated legal environment.
BPP Adapt: AI-driven machine learning technology which assesses your strengths and helps you target areas for improvement.
“You need to maximise your chances of passing your assessments. The practice multiple choice questions are particularly useful as there is an extensive amount available and there are in the same format as you will encounter in both BPP’s and the SRA’s SQE1 assessments. If you immerse yourself in this material, you will get the most from BPP’s SQE courses.”
What was the scholarship application like?
Callum received a full scholarship for his course at BPP. He was one recipient of BPP’s over £1.25 fund exclusively available for postgraduate law students. With so many scholarships available, Callum recommends applying as soon as you get your offer from BPP.
“The process initially requires you to answer questions about yourself and your journey. This is your opportunity to demonstrate certain strengths that BPP is looking for, such as resilience, dedication, and strong academics.”

How is Callum planning to complete QWE?
After completing the Essentials for Practice module, Callum will go on to complete two-years of QWE before becoming a qualified solicitor. Callum has secured his two years of QWE through Hassans, a Gibraltar-based international firm.
Callum advises students going through the application process to demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for the area of law they are applying for.
“Ultimately, alongside your academics, it is this passion and enthusiasm towards a firm that will help to convince recruiters of your commitment to them and make your application stand out.”
