SQE Funding: Loans & Other Options

The Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) is now the standard route to qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales. While it provides a more flexible and accessible pathway, the costs can still be significant.

This guide explores the various funding avenues available, from self-funding to employer sponsorships, scholarships, government loans, and private financing options.

SQE costs

Before diving into funding options, it’s essential to understand the costs involved. Expenses may include the cost of preparation courses, study materials, and living costs, alongside mandatory fees to sit the exams. The SQE is divided into two assessments, SQE1 and SQE2.

Fees for assessments taken up to September 2025:

  • SQE1: £1,888 (£944 for FLK1 and £944 for FLK2)

  • SQE2: £2,902

All fees are VAT exempt.

Fees for assessments from September 2025:

  • SQE1: £1,934 (£967 for FLK1 and £967 for FLK2)

  • SQE2: £2,974

The total cost will depend on individual circumstances and study choices and it's crucial to create a comprehensive budget that includes all potential expenses to ensure you can finance your SQE journey effectively.

SQE prep course costs

SQE preparation courses are designed to help candidates pass the exams efficiently. Course costs vary depending on the provider and level of support included.

Courses typically include study materials, online resources, practice exams, and tutor support. Some courses also offer additional features like work experience, additional support and guidance and access to other resources. It is important to consider your learning style and budget when choosing a preparation course.

BPP offers a range of SQE preparation options, including courses for SQE1 and SQE2 and integrated LLM programmes. LLM programmes can be a good option for those looking for a more immersive course, whilst gaining access to postgraduate loan funding.

How to fund SQE course fees

The good news is that multiple funding options are available to help cover the costs of SQE exams and preparation courses. These options can range from postgraduate master’s loans; scholarships, loans from private providers or studying for the SQE whilst undertaking an apprenticeship.

It is crucial to research each of these options carefully to determine your eligibility and find the best fit for your financial situation and career goals. Remember that planning ahead and exploring multiple avenues can significantly ease the financial burden of pursuing the SQE and set you on the path to a successful legal career.

Postgraduate government loans

Students enrolling in an SQE preparation course incorporating a master’s degree (such as an LLM) may be eligible for a Postgraduate Master’s Loan. This loan can be used towards tuition fees and living expenses.

Eligibility for these loans depends on factors like residency and previous study. It's essential to research the specific requirements and application process through Student Finance England to understand if this funding option suits your situation.
